In short
The extension is the ending of a domain name, such as .com.ng, .ng or .com. Nigerian businesses usually choose .com.ng; .ng is a shorter national option, .com suits an international audience, and .org.ng is for NGOs and associations.
Types of extension
- Country code (ccTLD): for a country, such as .ng for Nigeria. Nigeria’s extensions are run by NiRA, the Nigeria Internet Registration Association.
- Second-level country extensions: .com.ng, .org.ng and others: a category under .ng.
- Generic (gTLD): .com, .net, .org and newer ones such as .africa, .online or .shop.

Our advice: a business selling in Nigeria should use .com.ng (or .ng) as its main address, and register the .com of the same name to protect it. Read .ng vs .com.ng for more.
Does the extension affect Google?
A country extension tells Google your site is for Nigeria, which helps you appear in Nigerian searches. A .com can rank in Nigeria too, but needs other local signals. Either way, good content matters far more than the ending.
Global and African options
.africa is a pan-African extension for brands across the continent, and .org suits non-profits with an international audience. Search any name on domain registration to see which extensions are free.
